after the storm

Hurricane Sandy hit town last week.  Like many other storms she has reminded us to be thankful for the things we easily take for granted . . . family, friends, heat, water, food, shelter, so many of our basic necessities.

A year ago, I was facing another of life's storms as my friend Judith left for Germany.  This weekend she was back in town for a performance at the MoMA and as I was looking for some other files for her I ran across these.  They are from our last shoot together and for a year I had not looked at them, unable to process the loss.  I knew Judith would always be a friend and an important part of my life, but I would miss being around her in person, hearing her laugh, seeing her smile, the strength of her spirit.

Coming across these images evokes so many complex and contradicting emotions but ultimately I find a sense of tranquility amidst the turbulence, and a renewed appreciation for life's cycles.
